There’s been huge anticipation on who will be performing next year, so it’s time to get back to some great live Rock and Roll following the Summer Concert Tour having to take a break in 2022.

It’ll be 35 years since ZZ TOP played their epic New Zealand show where they performed to a reported crowd of over 80,000 at Western Springs in 1987. These Texan Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s are synonymous with beards, hot rod cars and spinning guitars. ZZ Top are famous for their mix of rock, blues, and boogie, with hugely popular albums such as Eliminator and Afterburner, which between them spent over two years on the NZ Charts, along with having produced instantly recognisable hits such as Sharp Dressed Man, Gimme All Your Lovin’, Legs and La Grange.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees PAT BENATAR & NEIL GIRALDO are one of the most formidable power couples in rock history. With no less than 14 songs having reached the NZ Top 50 singles charts, and spanning a career of over 43 years, hit songs like Heartbreaker, Love Is a Battlefield and We Belong are just some of the classic’s that’ll rock concert goers when we welcome them back to New Zealand after last performing at the Summer Concert Tour 10 years ago in 2013.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS bring a 90’s flavour to the tour with the band’s unique sound, considered to be a blending of alternative rock of the 80’s and 90’s with the hard rock of the 70’s. Lead singer Jeff Gutt is sure to get the crowd going with hits including Interstate Love Song, Plush and Vaseline, all of which have featured in the NZ single charts through the mid 90’s.

Originally scheduled to perform at the 2021 Summer Concert Tour, THE ANGELS lay claim to being one of Australia’s longest lasting bands, dating as far back as 1976 when they first released Am I Ever Gonna See You Face Again. Their relationship with the audience is everything to them, and their standard of live music is sure to have every show rocking when they perform the likes Take A Long Line and No Secrets.

Of today’s announcement, Greenstone Entertainment CEO Amanda Calvert comments:

“It’s been a tough couple of years for everyone, and we can’t wait to play our small part in bringing back live entertainment to our fans and to give them something to look forward to in the summer of 2023. Taupō, Whitianga and Queenstown are amongst New Zealanders favourite summer holiday spots, and it’s going to be awesome to see the regions humming with the tens of thousands of concert goers expected to attend one of our shows. We’ve been a must-do on people’s concert calendars over the last 12 years, and with a move to February for 2023 to circumvent other events taking place on our traditional January dates, we’re excited that we’ll be able to celebrate Waitangi long weekend at both our Taupō and Whitianga shows. We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone along for an awesome afternoon of classic rock in February next year.”

Powder Chutes are an emerging rock band from Wanaka combining youthful exuberance with riff-driven vintage grunt.

Already stalwarts of the vibrant local live scene, Powder Chutes have been fermenting amongst Wanaka’s rich creative melting pot of musicians, producers, DJs, artists, and athletes for a number of years.

Their debut EP, recorded at North Otago’s Studio Sublime with Steve Harrop and Tom Havard, dropped in January 2022 to critical acclaim, and has been streamed over 100,000 times in just 6 months. The EP and subsequent singles, feature art by Jersey born Producer, DJ, Snowboarder, Skater, and Graffiti Artist, Scott Nixon, and have been described as a joyful call to arms for anyone who likes pounding rock, grounded in melodic sensibilities.

Sweet noise pollution… groove-fuelled grunge… Powder Chutes are electrifying, ambitious, and hungry.

Of the announcement, Clarke from Powder Chutes comments “Powder Chutes being the opening support act for ZZ Top, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Stone Temple Pilots and The Angels is a HUGE deal for us, and to say we are stoked and thankful for the opportunity is a massive understatement. There’s a Billy Gibbons quote on our bassist’s wall that say’s “Play the music you want to hear”… and we’ve always tried to stick to this simple, yet epic advice. We would definitely have been in the crowd for this concert regardless, so to be chosen as the local support act has got us totally fired up… Bring it on!’

Greenstone Entertainment CEO Amanda Calvert adds: “It has been a long-standing tradition of ours to showcase local up and coming talent at our shows, and to give them an opportunity to perform in front of tens of thousands of people which they may not otherwise get the chance to do. Local act to open Taupo Summer Concert

Taupō based duo False Heights have been writing infectious bops since they started jamming in 2016. United by a mutual love for storytelling and their eclectic tastes in music, April and Ashley co-create an adventurous sound and deliver high energy performances.

Deriving their name from a T-shirt slogan and the suburb they once lived in, False Heights came about through an inside joke that they were the ‘typical’ low rent musicians living in a nice street. Influenced by an array of artists (Jimmy Eat World, Sigrid, The Cranberries, Bring Me The Horizon), the duo’s upcoming EP release in Spring 2022 boasts elements of rock, punk, reggae and a huge helping of unapologetic ‘mainstream’ pop.

False Heights’ newest artistic leap retains all the charm of their debut release while boldly exploring new territory, and this summer they are ready to win the hearts of audiences everywhere – bringing their uplifting sound to a world sorely in need of optimism.

Of the announcement, Ash from False Heights comments “False Heights are incredibly honoured to be a part of the Taupo Summer Concert in 2023! We are following in the footsteps of other prestigious local acts, and to share the stage with some of the greatest bands of all time, who are hugely influential in all of our lives, is a dream come true. The Taupo Summer Concert is one of a kind, and we cannot wait to join you all for a high energy, entertaining day, so be ready to get your dancing shoes on, we sure will be!”

Greenstone Entertainment CEO Amanda Calvert adds: “It has been a long-standing tradition of ours to showcase local up and coming talent at our shows, and to give them an opportunity to perform in front of tens of thousands of people which they may not otherwise get the chance to do. Greenstone Entertainment regrettably announces cancellation of 2022 Summer Concert Tour

With much regret and after 12 consecutive years, we must announce today that we are not going to be able to run our annual Summer Concert Tour in 2022.

The Summer Concert Tour had previously been postponed from the usual January dates to March dates for 2022. During 2021 our extensive work to develop a bespoke MIQ solution was unfortunately not successful. We had anticipated that by March (given what was happening around the rest of the world) that we could expect some form of home quarantine to be available, which would have been acceptable to the artists.

Given this situation, Greenstone Entertainment is unable to run the 2022 Tour. We understand that our loyal customers will be disappointed and we value your support. We always strive to deliver outstanding quality events, and great live music but unfortunately this year that was simply not going to be possible.

Greenstone Entertainment CEO, Amanda Calvert says: ‘There has been huge anticipation and enthusiasm from fans to find out more about our 2022 tour, and we’re saddened to have to make today’s announcement. With the current border restrictions, and the uncertainty surrounding the new Omicron variant, our international artists are not willing to spend 10 days in a managed quarantine facility.
We recognize the importance of the Summer Concert Tour to the regions in which it visits, with over 50,000 people attending the 3 shows annually. Not only from the millions of dollars of economic benefit it generates each year, but also the hundreds of local staff and suppliers that we’re able to engage and support, and the many local groups and charities who rely on this event for fundraising. With the current border restrictions in place for international tourists, this year would have been more important than ever for driving domestic tourism to the regions.’

Thank you for your support and patience during these trying times, and we look forward to rocking again with you in 2023.
